Welcome to Sevenfields Nature Reserve
Discover 100 acres of ancient wildflower meadows and diverse wildlife in the heart of Haydon Wick, North Swindon
Sevenfields Nature Reserve is a treasured 100-acre Local Nature Reserve located in Haydon Wick, North Swindon, nestled in a picturesque valley between Penhill, Haydon Wick, and Abbey Meads. Officially designated as a Local Nature Reserve in 1995, Sevenfields offers free public access to some of Wiltshire’s finest wildflower meadows and diverse wildlife habitats.
A Living Heritage
The name “Sevenfields” comes from the seven individual fields that make up this remarkable green space. What makes this reserve truly special is its unique history – Furrow Field remained unploughed for over 350 years, allowing rare wildflower species to flourish undisturbed. This exceptional conservation has resulted in over 200 species of wildflowers thriving across the meadows, making Sevenfields one of the most biodiverse locations in the region.
Wildlife at Sevenfields
The reserve is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. Throughout the year, visitors can encounter:
Birds: Woodpeckers, numerous songbirds, and seasonal migratory species fill the air with their calls
Butterflies: Over 26 different butterfly species flutter through the meadows during warmer months
Mammals: Deer can often be spotted grazing in the early morning or evening hours
Flora: Wild cherry and apple blossom in spring, followed by bluebells, cowslips, hawthorns, and hyacinths creating spectacular seasonal displays
The mosaic of habitats – including open meadows, hedgerows, woodland areas, and a stream running through the valley – supports this incredible diversity of life.
